but questions like that only encouraged the crazies. For all Dillinger knew,
this guy had a crush on Luke and saw him exit Dillinger s car this morning.
Luke McCall. Dylan Peterson leaned closer and dropped his voice
to a bare murmur above a whisper. I know you two bonded. I m here to
help you.
Dillinger nodded as he made notes in his book. The things he wrote
were meaningless gibberish because he couldn t stop his brain from
jumping around like a screeching monkey. Luke! Luke! It screamed at him.
He knows something about Luke!
How can you help me, Mr. Peterson?
When he didn t answer, Dillinger reluctantly looked up. Dylan had a
most perplexed expression on his face. I don t know what happened
between you two, but I do know Luke is running.
Running? Dillinger dropped any pretense of taking notes. You mean
he s leaving Twin Pines? But he s enrolled at the college.
Yeah, I m aware of that, but something freaked him out because
when I went up to talk to him, he shoved me down hard enough to smack
my head on the marble floor in the main hall. Dylan turned and showed
Dillinger an angry red lump that was plainly visible since Dylan was totally
bald. I can feel that he s getting farther away every minute we sit here and
you act like I m a nutbar.
I m sorry, but I still don t know what you
Do you want to stop Luke from running or not? Dylan sounded
exasperated and cranky. This tugging is starting to make me feel sick. I d

like to deal with this then go study. I have a test in the morning.
Dillinger had no idea what Dylan was talking about, but if he could lead
him to Luke, than Dillinger was willing to follow. He folded his notebook
closed, clicked his pen, tucked both objects away, and then retrieved his
keys.
My car is right out front.
They were off in under sixty seconds.
How do you know Luke? Dillinger didn t know where to start with
the conversation, so he just kept the focus on Luke.
He s a gunner and wide receiver on the football team. Dylan peered
through the windshield. Can you go any faster?
The speed limit on this road is fifty-five miles an hour. Please don t tell
me that you are suggesting an officer of the law should break the law.
No, I never mind. Dylan slumped in his seat a bit more and then
started chewing his gum at the speed of a ravenous bunny.
Dillinger tried to ignore the chomping, but it was loud and had the dual
effect of filling the small space of the car with the scent of bubble gum.
Please, could you close your mouth?
What? Oh, yeah, sorry. Dylan took the wad of gum out of his mouth
and was on the verge of putting it in the ashtray when Dillinger s pointed
cough stopped him. Oh, right, yeah. Dylan fished around in his jacket
pocket, found a piece of paper, put the gum in that, and then put it in the
ashtray.
They rode in silence for a long time. The farther away from town they
got, the weirder Dillinger felt about the entire situation. Why would Luke
run? For the life of him, Dillinger couldn t wrap his head around anything
he d said or done that would scare him off. He d wanted to move him into
his house and into his life, but he hadn t told Luke that for just this
reason such a quick thing was not like him. And if the idea of it bothered
him, he was certain it would have freaked Luke out. So he d kept his
mouth shut. But maybe Luke had read the feelings in his eyes. Or maybe
something he d said during that raunchy dirty talk had been too much, or
too gross, or fuck it. He was wrapping himself up in knots for no very
good reason.
Dedicated Alpha 65
How do you know where Luke is? Dillinger realized he was in his
personal vehicle with a student of the college heading out into the night and
he had no proof of anything.
I can feel him. I already explained that.
If this is some kind of joke...
Dylan sighed loud and quick. Would I be wasting my precious free
time on messing with you? Why? I don t even know you.
That s right, you don t. Dillinger considered him briefly then returned
his gaze to the road. So how do you know anything about me and Luke?
This is the last time I m going to say this, so listen up. Dylan took a
deep breath and then very slowly said, I can feel your souls tugging at one
another. You belong together.
And what the hell do you have to do with that?
I can t tell you. I have to show you.
Dillinger almost turned the car around. This was asinine. But when he
actually considered driving back to Twin Pines, his chest tightened up.
Continuing in the direction of the interstate calmed that pinched feeling. So,
even though this was beyond weird, he kept going. Dillinger had always
trusted his gut, and for some unknown reason, he trusted that this man, as
curious as he was, would lead him to Luke.
